Pax

I turned my closet upside down looking for my weapons’ bag. I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t thought to look for it before today. How could I have been so stupid, so complacent?

I kept up my martial arts training, but I had neglected my knives and guns. I had bought into the tranquility of this island and thought we were adequately secure.

The sound of gunfire and muffled shouts forced me to abandon my search. With the certainty that Rafa was out there facing this threat alone, I ran out of the house with my heart in my throat, my breathing harsh and my limbs trembling so badly that I could barely run.

The gunfire and voices came from the beach area.

Dressed in sneakers, shorts, and a T-shirt, and with my thick hair wild and about my face, I ducked through the back sliding glass door, which was already opened.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!” I mentally berated myself. I was supposed to have been helping to look after Rafa and keeping him safe. How did I become this disorganized mess?

“That’s as far as you go,” Rafa drawled at the intruders standing on the beach.

What threw me off balance and paused me in my tracks was Rafa’s voice, sounding distinctly relaxed and self-assured.

“That wasn’t such a bright idea to come onto the property from the beach when there were no objects to hide behind,” Rafa continued.

“You killed my men!” Lucifer growled. “I’m going to feed you your balls!”

Rafa chuckled. “Very colorful, Lucifer, but I assure you that your men are not dead. Although when they wake up, they’re going to wish that they were dead.”

“Move aside! I came for my daughter.”

Rafa chuckled again, but it was clear that there was no humor there. “I have no doubt that you came for your daughter. However, the method and timing of your arrival indicates that you intend to force her compliance. If that’s the case, you might want to reconsider.”

It was Lucifer’s turn to chuckle. Not only was there no humor in it but there was also a dark, ominous threat. “No man can keep my daughter from me,” Lucifer sneered.

“How about your daughter keeping you away?” I stepped onto the beach, slightly behind Rafa but out of Lucifer’s line of fire. “What do you want, Lucifer?” I found it a physical struggle to not go to Rafa and feel his arms around me. Was it only a couple of hours since I was last there? What I wouldn’t give to hold the rest of the world at bay and be back in Rafa’s arms again.

“You need to come home, Pax,” Lucifer hissed. “You have wasted enough time with this fool!”

“Lucifer—”

“What the hell are you wearing?” Lucifer roared. He stalked toward me, but Rafa stepped into his path. Lucifer was undeterred. With his gaze glued on me, the disdain in his voice was unmistakable. “Is this any way for an engaged princess to be dressed?”

“That’s a neat trick, Dad,” Rafa said mockingly. “How can Padma be married to me and engaged to someone else?’

“I’m not talking to you,” Lucifer jeered.
